The Story of Xiao Kai

Xiao Kai is from Henan. Chi Heng’s sponsorship and his own hard work enabled him to study and graduate from Sichuan Normal University. Normally, a graduate from such a prestigious university could easily find a well-paying job in a large city, yet Xiao Kai gave up on a comfortable life and, instead, took a teaching job at Liangshan, one of the most impoverished areas in China, located in remote high mountains with scant natural resourcesand modern facilities.Being of Han descent, Xiao Kai finds it a challenge to interact with the minority Yi people there due to cultural differences. He also must leave behind his wife and young kid to be away from home for long periods at a time. Yet, despite these immense personal sacrifices, he insists on continuing to teach there, because he sees the value of helping people who are less fortunate than he is. He has experienced how Chi Heng had lifted him up and given him a future, and he wants to do the same for the impoverished Yi students in Liangshan. This is a great example of the “one helps three, three helps nine” ideal that has been instilled in him by Chi Heng.

Stories like this are prevalent among Chi Heng sponsored students. To date, 4,384 students have already graduated from universities. On average, over 83% of Chi Heng-sponsored high school grads go on to higher education, with 50% entering universities and the rest entering technical colleges. Half of those entering universities manage to get into first-tier universities in China.

Due to the economic effects of the Covid pandemic, our donation intake has dropped precipitously by 40% in the last few years while our expenses are staying at 79% of where they were 5 years ago despite our aggressive cost cutting. Our large annual deficits arenow close to exhausting our reserve funds.
